110 Hickory Street | Built 1840 | Current Owners: Wayne and Annmarie Locklear
Built in 1840 and identified as Classic Revival in style, Hickory Estate predates the Civil War and reflects an earlier chapter of Summerville’s architectural ambition. Its expansive wraparound porch, restored original balusters, and floating foyer staircase convey both formality and Southern ease.

The house is believed to have been constructed by Elizabeth and E. M. Gilbert and later owned by members of the Mixson family between 1912 and 1948. J. S. Mixson, associated with agricultural brokerage and leadership in the South Carolina Produce Association, is one of the more notable figures tied to the property.

Inside, fourteen-foot ceilings rise above restored moldings and original hardware. Historic mantels — including pieces salvaged from White Gables after the 1886 earthquake — connect this home to others in town. In the gardens, camellias believed to be more than 180 years old and established boxwoods frame the property with enduring beauty.

Wayne and Annmarie Locklear continue the work of preservation, balancing careful restoration with lived-in warmth.
